Read moreFirst published in 1987, Ars Magica is a tabletop RPG set in a version of medieval Europe where magic is real and all the player-characters are wizards. Well, technically. One of the novel ideas of Ars Magica was “troupe-style play” in which every player created multiple characters, playing different ones as the story dictated. You might be a powerful wizard of the Order of Hermes one week, then one of their menial sidekicks called “grogs” the next.
Ars Magica also pioneered rules for shared worldbuilding, with players collaborating to create a covenant—a stronghold where the wizards and their associated outcasts and misfits banded together. It also suggested players take turns being the Game Master or Story Guide, each telling different stories in Mythic Europe before handi…
Read moreThe newest trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 reveals its latest challenger: Geras. If you’re unfamiliar, he’s the keeper of the hourglass of time who debuted in Mortal Kombat 11, and given that Mortal Kombat 1 is all about timeline shenanigans it makes sense he’d appear to tidy things up. (By punching them.)
Geras seems to have brought back his Temporal Advantage ability, which lets him freeze an opponent in time and then hit them in the butt (or wherever). He’s got a whole raft of time-themed attacks, but some sand-related ones as well, including a fatality that involves holding his opponent’s face against the edge of a whirling sandstorm to angle-grind them down to the bone.
NetherRealm recently revealed that JK Simmons will reprise his role as Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1, joini…

Read moreRemnant 2’s third DLC, The Dark Horizon is out now—and it represents somewhat of a victory lap for Gunfire Games who’ve made a game I’ve been a pretty large advocate for. It’s felt like a bit of an oasis in a sea of live service speculative tailspins—Gunfire decided to simply release three quite good DLCs in the span of a year at a reasonable price point, with nary a battle pass in sight.
In addition to getting an early peek at The Dark Horizon, I also got to sit down with CEO and game director David Adams, as well as co-founder and development director Ben Gabbard to talk about the history of the game and its design philosophies for its first anniversary.
Initially, Remnant: From the Ashes spawned from a game called Chronos: From the Ashes, a launch title for …
Read moreJust a day after promising they were working on it, the Content Warning team has released a patch that fixes a handful of bugs and adds three new items: reporter mics, party poppers, and a sound player.
The patch announcement came via an in-game video clip that looks like it was done with minimal preparation—and by “minimal” I mean somebody handed Zorro a piece of paper and said “read this, we’ll fix it in post” and then skipped the “fix it in post” part.
The new toys are nice: The reporter mic sells for $50 and looks to be a more portable version of the $100 boom mic, while the sound player will set you back $100—this is all in-game currency, of course. The party pooper popper, which as far as I can tell has no real practical value (although maybe I’m just not u…
Read moreAt AMD’s Computex 2024 keynote Dr. Lisa Su was keen to point out how well its Radeon Instinct MI300X graphics cards do when paired with OpenAI’s latest tools. Unfortunately, all it did was once more prove that you really ought not to trust everything you’re told by an AI.
Dr. Su was demoing the Wanderlust, a travel assistant built on GPT-4 and, because we’re in Taipei right now, that was what the demo was centred around. Unfortunately it got the location of the Computex show, the event at which AMD was hosting the opening keynote, completely and utterly wrong.
It was, at least, in Taipei. Unfortunately it was on almost the completely opposite end of town. And there’s no excuse that it was using the old location of Computex, around the Taiwan World Trade Center, because it wa…
Read moreTwo Point Studios has announced the release date of Two Point Museum, the next game in its Two Point series, as March 4, 2025. It’s now available for prepurchase as well, with a price of $30 for the standard edition and $40 for a deluxe explorer edition.
Following on the vein mined by Two Point Hospital and Two Point Campus, Two Point Museum will be a management game that puts you in charge of building specialized museums at locations around the fictional and very silly world of Two Point County. You’ll send out expeditions to find new two-point treasures that you’ll display in a museum you design, lay out, and run with guest tours, pricing, and staff assignments. You’ll also have to look out for thieves, and some of the museum exhibits are pretty dangerous to the guests—l…
Read moreSince the dramatic and exciting Starfield gameplay reveal trailer released back in 2022, it’s largely been radio silence from Bethesda in terms of revealing new details about the game.
However, one eagle-eyed gamer has just seemingly spotted a Starfield feature that has been hiding in plain sight ever since that gameplay trailer reveal—it’s just that hardly any gamers spotted it.
The discovery, which was posted in a thread on the Starfield subreddit, was made when the gamer just happened to spot that in one frame of the gameplay trailer you can see the option to ‘pickpocket’ an NPC.
During the early gameplay footage showing the player fighting a bunch of space pirates within a dark facility, one enemy runs up to the player and, just before they get killed, an opt…
Read moreBungie recently won nearly $500,000 in damages from a Destiny 2 player who subjected one of its community managers to repeated racist harassment and threats. The victory was hailed by developers at Bungie and beyond as a significant step forward in the effort to eliminate abuse from “fans”: Kathryn Tewson, a paralegal who worked on the case, said the ruling in favor of Bungie “has created a path for those with the resources to identify stochastic terrorists and hold them accountable” in court.
That may be so, but it doesn’t mean that the problem is going away anytime soon—in fact, Bungie recently said in the Destiny subreddit that developers, including some who aren’t community managers, are still being harassed “just because they work at Bungie.”
The statement came in…
Read moreBack when AMD previewed the Zen 5 architecture, it promised an IPC gain averaging 16% over equivalent Zen 4 parts. While the new chips handily beat out the older ones in heavily threaded benchmarks, the gains were smaller in games. That led to some criticisms, with many gamers believing the new chips didn’t offer enough to tempt them to upgrade.
AMD acknowledged these concerns in a blog post, saying it’s internal testing was “run in admin mode, which produced results that reflect branch prediction code optimizations not present in the version of Windows reviewers used to test Ryzen 9000 Series”. The blog goes on to say the Windows 11 24H2 update will improve Zen 5 gaming performance when it’s released later this year.
According to testing by Hardware Unboxed, Windows 11 24H2…
Read moreSony has apologized to Naughty Dog studio boss Neil Druckmann for “misrepresenting his words” in a recent promotional interview, which it acknowledged contained “several significant errors and inaccuracies.” The interview has now been taken down.
In the interview published by Sony last week, Druckmann reportedly praised the potential of generative AI, saying it is “opening the door for us to take on more adventurous projects and push the boundaries of storytelling in games.” He also talked up the studio’s next game, which he said “could redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.”
But shortly after the interview went up, Druckmann took to Twitter to clarify that the reported statement about redefining perceptions of gaming was “not quite what I said.”

Read moreDiablo 4 players can finally rest easy—that is, unless they’re trying to farm these pieces themselves—as the last of Diablo 4’s six elusive super-rare items has been found. As spotted by AnyComputer on the Diablo 4 subreddit, the final piece of the collection was The Melted Heart of Selig. It dropped for a Chinese necromancer player in the Blind Burrows, a dungeon that can be found in the Hawezar region of the map.
The Heart’s effect isn’t that exciting, unfortunately. It gives a substantial boost to your class’s resource, but turns it into a pseudo-barrier, draining 3-8 of your resource for every 1% of damage you would’ve otherwise taken.
That 3-8 variable is massive: if your character took 10% of its life in damage, for example, a roll of 3 would drain 30…
Read more“Look, Arisen, a ladder! We should climb it, Arisen! I think, Arisen, there may be something to discover atop yon ladder, after we climb it, mayhaps?”
At first, I liked my main pawn. At least, after I changed her vocation from the entirely useless archer to the far more valuable mage. But then she and my other pawns told me, about six or seventeen times, that there was a treasure chest over there, did I see it? And a statue over there, perhaps we could climb it? And so many ladders, as if they were somehow the most important thing in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Maybe they are. I’ve stopped investigating them out of a sense of bloody-mindedness because I’m so sick of my pawns talking about them. There is, however, a solution. Well, there are two solutions. The first is to stop pl…

Cyan Worlds announced today that the remake of Riven, the sequel to the remake of Myst, is set to launch on PC, Mac, and VR platforms on June 25. The updated version of the famed puzzle-adventure promises not just a technological do-over of the original game, but a “from the ground up” remake with new characters, “refreshed” puzzles, and an expanded storyline.
One of the biggest hooks in the Riven remake, like its predecessor, is the promise of complete freedom of movement. Where the original game had players clicking through a series of static images with light animated trappings, in the updated version you’ll be able to look and walk around as you like. “Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer returning to Riven or a newcomer eager to explore Riven’s mysteries …
Read moreWhen Jacob reviewed the Intel Core i9 14900K last week he wasn’t particularly impressed with the lack of improvements over the previous generation, and one thing that seems to have remained the same is the tendency to run on the warmer side under heavy load. Of course if you’re in the market for Intel’s latest and greatest you could always just do what the rest of us do and simply accept that the chip is well-within safe tolerances, or if you’re worried about heating up your case you could simply invest in a decent AIO to shift those pesky extra degrees back out into the big wide world.
If you’re Youtuber der8auer though, you might consider doing something drastic. While his channel covers all sorts of hardware breakdowns and analysis he often focuses on cooling solutions. One of …
Read moreIn 2015, my GTX 770M laptop crumpled like a paper bag when it squared up against the Witcher 3, leaving me hungry for more power and inspired to build a GTX 1080 desktop a year later. In 2020, that noble beast was in turn brought low by Cyberpunk 2077, hardly ever keeping to a consistent 60fps at 1080p low.
The seasons change, the tide rolls in, and CD Projekt destroys my computers: the beefy, pricey RTX 3070 I got just last year can just barely crest 40fps with the Witcher 3’s new ray tracing implementation, and this is one of the rare times I’ve looked at RT comparisons and gone, “hey, that actually does look better!” If you’re like me and eager to eke some extra performance out of The Witcher 3 Next Gen’s ray tracing, you may want to try modder alikoko’s Optim…
Read moreAfter pulling off a Darktide redemption arc last year, Fatshark’s not resting on its inquisitorial laurels. Secrets of the Machine God, Darktide’s latest update, arrived earlier today, bringing a new mission to revive an abandoned Adeptus Mechanicus foundry and a set of new weapon types. If you’re not already thrilled, you should be: It’s never a bad time when the tech-priests are around.
The new mission, Clandestium Gloriana, will have strike teams descend into a derelict “Foundryplex”—a massive production facility where the AdMech tech-priests once worked their fabled wonders, which the Inquisition hopes to reawaken for its war effort. The mission will feature some new tech from Fatshark, like a mission-giver who will accompany the players and a variable end-of-miss…
Read moreRemember that last Matrix movie? The one about capital subsuming all critique, turning it into a trendy and infinitely exploitable set of meaningless images and signifiers divorced from their original context? How it laments the way the culture industry can’t let a good thing lie, instead pounding every last inch of profit out of any marketable property until there’s nothing left but a tasteless grey mush?
That was cool. Anyway, they’re making another Matrix movie.
Per Variety, The Matrix 5 (which will surely become The Matrix: R-something at some point during production) will be the first entry in the series without one of the Wachowski sisters directing. Instead, it’ll be helmed by Drew Goddard, the screenwriter behind The Martian. Goddard will also write the script and pr…
Read moreWalmart and Roblox have teamed up to provide a service I didn’t know anyone needed: letting anyone over the age of 13 browse and buy goods from Walmart via Roblox, which amounts to an Inception-style headache.
There was already a way to walk through a virtual retail shop via Roblox’s Walmart Discovered: a game that lets players discover new Roblox games, buy emotes, customize their very own Walmart cart, and show off their favourite items. It was made by Walmart in a crossover event with Roblox. But now it’s not just limited to immaterial purchases, as players located in the US who are 13 years and older can now actually order real-world items to their door (via Digiday).
“There is a traditional sort of checkout flow where you put your name, your address, a…
Read moreYou can spend a long time trying to nail down the exact parts required for a full custom loop build. In a way, that’s a part of it. You really come to appreciate the PC you’ve built by the end of the process, as it’s one you’ve created from the ground up.
But if you’re less sentimental, you might just want someone else to put together a parts list for you. EZ PZ. That’s what EK does with its ‘Loop’ builds, and right now everything on its store is 24% off, which makes such a build that little bit more affordable.
Alright, affordable these builds ain’t, but every little helps when investing in something as expensive as a fully liquid-looped build. You’re looking at spending anything from $1,284 for the cheapest all-inclusive kit to around $2,628 for the so-called “Golden…

Oh, that was embarrassing. Not so much the guessing itself, but the way I managed to waste an entire row thanks to a typo. It’s my own fault—my brain was so excited it forgot to properly engage my fingers first, and I had to suffer the sight of a guess I already knew was wrong throw away a whole row. I won’t make that mistake again. Well, not tomorrow, anyway. Maybe.

It’s not cool when a retailer leak blows a big game announcement. Just ask Bethesda, which saw its surprise Rage 2 announcement spoiled by an errant Walmart Canada listing. (I bet Pete Hines is still steamed about that.) But you know what might be even more frustrating? When your own gear store does it.
That seems to be what’s happened with the next Hearthstone expansion: As noticed and captured by Hearthpwn, a t-shirt for something called Hearthstone: Showdown in the Badlands appeared on the official Blizzard store recently.
The Badlands, as the Warcraft wiki explains, is an arid, desolate region in Khaz Modan, where “only the hardiest of creatures can survive.” It’s traditionally viewed as Horde territory but the Alliance has a presence as well, but it really doesn’t…
